The House Math competition occurred during Flex Time on May 4th, with a special Star Wars theme. Featuring up to four competitors per House, live grading and a scoreboard, 40 total problems about the curriculum and advanced math, and seven estimation questions, it offered a great opportunity to engage in fast-paced problem solving while also earning House points.

As the competition began, the initial silence from anticipation was filled with an electric atmosphere of intense discussion, as competitors within a House worked together to solve problems. The designated “runners” worked hard to efficiently hand in their answers to the graders and then receive the next set of problems. Heads of Houses and spectators cheered on their teams, with some even holding up encouraging paper signs. After 30 minutes of close competition, the standings were finalized. By a single point, Bremner’s clinched the win.

“I liked the math questions because they were all about Star Wars. It was also fun to work with my peers and solve challenging questions,” commented Ryan Su in Year 9. Artun Arat in Year 11 reflected, “I thought it was really cool solving problems and competing with my friends from younger grades. The questions were really interesting and really had me focus and lock in on the problems.”

Following House Math, the Prefects’ Cup race has tightened. Scadding’s lead was cut after their 8th place finish while Bremner’s won, taking valuable points away from Martland’s and setting up a close finale decided by House Track. However, Scadding’s can still win the Cup with an upper midfield finish. With glory on the line, the race for the Prefects’ Cup guarantees an epic conclusion to the year.
