Solidarity in Isolation

by Eugene Ye

With so many concerts, orchestras, and rehearsals all cancelled because of COVID-19, musicians like me are stuck at home with nothing to do. So, with nothing better to do, orchestras around the world like the Chicago Civic Orchestra and even the Toronto Symphony Orchestra have turned to technology and the internet to share their passion. I thought it would be a fun idea to do the same with a few friends of mine from the Phil and Eli Taylor Academy for Young Artists and put together a collaboration video. 10 of us agreed to do it and filmed each of our individual parts on our phones and sent them to me to edit it all together. The piece we chose, Villa Lobos’ Bachianas Brasileiras no.1, was not a difficult piece to play, but it was difficult to put together even if played in person. Somehow, through the power of Adobe Premiere Pro, we made it work.

Even in isolation, we are still able to come together to try something new. This was my first time editing video and audio and it took a very long time, but it worked out. I want to highly encourage you to go outside of your comfort zone and explore something you’ve been wanting to do for a long time. We have a lot more time on our hands now and you never know, you might just find your new hobby.
