Quiddity’s writing contests have once again graced the UCC Community with their presence. After a brief intermission, the school’s foremost literary publication took April by storm with the launch of the inaugural Quixote Competition, a creative writing contest inviting all grades to submit short stories and poems centered around the unattainable aspects of life

The competition garnered much enthusiasm as club head Cyrus Sarfaty and advisor Julian Bauld received a total of 33 submissions vying for the prize, making it a resounding success. Drawing inspiration from Don Quixote, an iconic literary figure known for his tremendous reverence for chivalry and heroic quests, Quiddity encouraged contemplation to explore the perception of ‘idealization’ through their writing. “I want the students to challenge themselves and think beyond the envelope,” Mr.Bauld said.

After much deliberate anticipation following the April 22nd deadline, the top three submissions were disclosed during May 2nd’s Friday Assembly. Morgan Deng from Year 11 finished in third place with his poem ‘Muse’, Ethan Lu from Year 10 claimed second place with a creative short story, and Year 11’s Oliver Chen won the grand prize of $200 with his poem entitled ‘Not Ours to Hold’. Congratulations to the winners and all contestants who contributed to the success of the competition!

Beyond gaining recognition and prizes, the writing competitions offer a platform for students to express their creativity and voice. “Quiddity is an important destination for students who want to challenge themselves,” said Mr.Bauld. “It is a place where they can be playful, serious, and demonstrate their ability to use language across various forms of prose.”

But the Quixote Competition isn’t the only creative writing initiative underway. Submissions for the next annual Quiddity book are now open, marking its 34th edition. With the deadline quickly approaching on Monday, May 12, students are encouraged to contribute their creative writing and art produced this year.

For those interested in getting involved in future exciting writing contests or contributing to the annual Quiddity book, look outn for an emails or reach out to Julian Bauld (jbauld@ucc.on.ca)

Until the next anecdote drops,
