A month has already flown by since the September 18 Club Fair, when the UCC student centre came alive with a buzz of UCC students weaving through the maze of tri-fold displays and welcoming club leaders. Showcasing almost 100 extracurricular opportunities–spanning athletics, debate, cultural clubs, and other passion-driven activities– the fair reflects the college’s commitment to providing an inclusive platform for its diverse student body.

Beyond the breadth of existing clubs, what highlights the UCC community is the students’ willingness to create their own spaces–turning gaps into opportunities for distinct passions to thrive. This year, several new clubs have emerged, bringing student visions to reality and enriching the community.

One of the new additions to the college’s roster is the Board Game Creation Society, founded and led by Year 11 students Linc Godfrey and Artun Arat.

As the name suggests, the club dives into the design process and logistics of creating a new game, promoting creative expression and springboarding game-related ideas among members. Under the supervision of Mr. Chan during biweekly meetings at flex time, students spend sessions indulging in board games, analyzing their mechanics, and playtesting their ideas–all in pursuit of the goal of creating a fully realized game that resonates with the UCC community through immersive worldbuilding.

Club head Linc Godfrey shared, “It’s a club that I’m hoping everyone in it can contribute to. I’ve definitely been in clubs where I feel like most people don’t engage in the purpose of the club but I want to change that. I hope people show up because they genuinely care and are passionate about game design.”

From envisioning games as a child, to committing to game design on his personal project, to contributing to the creation of the Board Game Creation Society, the club head shows how student initiative and passion can add new hues to the evolving mosaic of the UCC community.

At the college, clubs serve as a medium for personal exploration and inspiration, each fostering its own community and roster of shared interests. By putting your ideas forward, you not only strengthen UCC’s commitment to inclusivity but also find inspiration among individuals who share your passions.

Until the next anecdote drops,

Jeffrey
