On Sept 18th, the UCC Student Center was abuzz as hundreds of students attended the Club Fair. This event is always a great kick-off to the school year by showcasing the amazing extracurricular activities in our community.

Students were welcomed by enthusiastic leaders from more than 60 clubs supported by tri-fold displays, sign-up sheets, swag and more. This publication, The Blue and White (TBAW), was well-represented along with volunteering opportunities, athletics, the outdoors, history, music, culture and more!

As one student put it: “There’s something here for everyone.” That’s the spirit of the Club Fair: an open invitation to explore, learn, and try something new.

Faculty advisers play a key role as well, providing guidance and oversight to help each club succeed. Mr. John Sweetman is UCC’s Director of CAS and Clubs and has the final say on starting new clubs. At the Fair, he emphasized that the collective effort of members is key to any club’s success.

As an example, the UCC Math Society focuses on building interest in math, while also helping UCC students prepare for contests from the University of Waterloo and the American Mathematical Association. Approximately 200 UCC students take part in these contests each year, with executives leading members through problem sets, while advisers Mr Anthony Wu and Ms Bina Evans providing input on the overall direction.

The Club Fair is also an important way for students to come together across classes and grade levels. Younger students get a chance to work with upper year students, who in turn get the opportunity to mentor and lead. You don’t need to have any particular expertise to join a club, just some curiosity and the willingness to get involved.

This year’s Club Fair was an inspiration as always, capturing the energy, passion, and creativity of our student body. Here’s to a great year ahead with our incredible clubs on campus!
