So.. the spring season has started! The dreaded 4:00 AM wakeup times has arrived..
At first, we started on the ergs, as it was a bit too chilly to get out just yet. However, as it started to warm up, we slowly transitioned to the water. The main differences here in Toronto compared to Tennessee is weather mainly. Toronto as you could guess.. is VERY COLD. When we are on the water, it’s typically less than 5 degrees. Again, VERY COLD. Although the weather is pretty.. cold, we did manage to have a couple good days in when the weather help up to it’s promises.
Our early spring training mainly consisted of getting “back into the feel” of the boats, considering we lost about a week of training due to weather, and we haven’t been on boats since Tennessee (check out that article!). After that though, we started upping the intensity. More “faster”, and longer pieces helped us get up to shape for our first race:
The St. Catharines Rowing Club Early Bird Regatta!!
The regatta was sort of a “test run” for the rowing club hosting it, as it was the first of the season. Not as many clubs joined, but everyone still had a fun time racing. For me, I was with the Legacy, the Junior 8. This is the fastest boat in the junior age group at our school, and it showed. We didn’t race any other teams, just boats from our school. This was because there were no other boats signed up from the other teams. We raced the lightweight boat, and the novice boat. It was a fun race, I got to experience my first race, and got some needed experience, because next up… is the:
John Bennet Regatta, Buffalo NY.
Sorry, you’re gonna have to wait for the article to come out on that, because the race actually hasn’t started yet..
See you, and GO BLUES!!!
