Hello again!! It’s been quite a while since my last music post… the election happened… I have an econ test tomorrow, but, who cares, let’s get into some music. I will say, I’ve recently had quite a few people come up to me in the halls saying they enjoy reading these (and love the songs) and those comments always make my day. So, if you’re reading this, feel free to stop me any time to talk about music, I’m always happy to speak. Anyways, onto the next songs.

25. Magdalena Bay – The Ballad of Matt and Mica

I’m shocked it took me this long to stumble onto the music of Magdalena Bay. I’ve known of them for a few years now, but I never actually listened to any of their music. Their most recent album, “Imaginal Disk” is truly fantastic and one of my favourite releases of the year. This song closes that album. Something I really love is how it incorporates elements from all the other songs on this album and really feels like a proper closing song, like the end of a journey.

26. Tyler, The Creator – Balloon (feat. Doechii)

Also, since the last time I made one of these, Tyler, The Creator released his new album. Balloon really stuck out to me (perhaps because of the Doechii feature), but I love how much fun both artists have with the song. It’s so refreshing to listen to a song that is just… enjoyable to listen to. Special shoutout to Doechii’s verse just because I love her music now too (shoutout to my cousin).

27. Mazzy Star – Fade Into You

As you can see, the songs on this edition of Matty’s Music are not connected in any way. This song is much slower and more relaxed. When I listen to it, I feel like I’m sitting in the middle of an echo chamber (literally). It’s truly such a simple song—the hook is just three words. But, this song proves that music doesn’t have to be more than a simple piano, guitar, and a few lyrics here and there. Mazzy Star is an artist I’ve been wanting to get into for so long, and Fade Into You is my gateway. A classic.

Okay, as we get to the last song on this list, I’d like to issue a bit of a disclaimer. I’ve included some hyperpop (or hyperpop-adjacent) musicians on my previous lists (eg: SOPHIE), but for a genre that I was obsessed with for a good portion of my life, I need to be adding more! So the final song is much more hyperpop-coded.

28. A.G. Cook – Xcxoplex (feat. Charli XCX)

Artists like A.G. and Charli, while their songs may not have too many words (see Charli repeating the phrase “fall in love again and again” for the entirety of her song Everything is Romantic), demonstrate their talent in songwriting—because it isn’t just about the lyrics. This song proves how quality is also influenced by the ability to hook you in—something that this song’s chorus (in particular) does.

Also, to anyone still reading this, I realize that I’ve never compiled all of these songs into ONE
list. Now, I know that I always add the Spotify links to these songs but… I am an Apple Music
user (this is my reasoning for the playlist being on AM). Anyways, I’ve put all of these songs
onto one playlist for ease of access! (also, go check out my other playlists too!!)
