Lebron Raymone James Jr., or better known as Bronny James, is the eldest son of NBA legend Lebron James. After averaging 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists, and 0.8 steals per game playing Division 1 NCAA basketball at the University of Southern California (USC), Bronny was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers with the 55th overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. He appeared in 6 games for the Lakers during the preseason averaging 15.5 minutes, 4.2 points and 1.5 rebounds per game. Although his ‘lackluster’ play was criticized heavily, there were still some glimpses of his true potential. In the Lakers’ preseason finale against the Golden State Warriors Bronny exploded for 17 points, with 4 rebounds and 3 steals in 35 minutes played.

After ending the preseason on a high note, he and his father made history during the Lakers’ season opener on October 22nd when they became the first father-son duo to play in an NBA game at the same time. Since then Bronny has played in 3 more NBA regular season games for the Lakers, averaging 3.2 minutes and 1 point per game over his 4 total appearances. Although he has been unimpressive so far in his professional basketball debut, it is important to note that players drafted in the mid to late second round typically spend most, if not all, of their time in the G League developing and hoping to one day contribute on an NBA roster. During the 2023-24 season, 23 of the 28 players selected in the second round of the 2023 draft spent time in the G League. So it is not surprising that Bronny is performing the way that he is. On the other hand, there seems to be a double standard in which the media judges him due to the status and fame his father has received; the expectations for him are higher than any other second round draft pick in the history of the NBA. And one can speculate that he may have been thrust into the spotlight of the league, due to the influence of his father, even though he wasn’t fully ready yet to compete at such a level.

It seems as though this effect has worn off, though, as recently it was announced that the Los Angeles Lakers would be assigning Bronny to their G League affiliate, South Bay. He is expected to debut for the team in their game against Salt Lake City on Saturday, November 9th. The organization’s current plan is for Bronny to play exclusively in G League home games, as he splits time between the Lakers and South Bay.

Speculating about Bronny’s future in the NBA is a complicated task. While he may not be a star prospect, his incredible potential lies in his work ethic, his athletic ability and in the mentorship from his father. If he continues to develop and adapt to the NBA’s demands, Bronny could become a role player or even a core player within an NBA rotation. Despite all of that, one thing that is for sure about Bronny is that the public’s perception of him will always be influenced by his father’s legacy; some fans may view him as a beneficiary of nepotism, while others will recognize his individual efforts and potential. Ultimately, Bronny’s success will depend on his ability to prove himself on the court and earn his place in the NBA; his father’s name can only take him so far.
