Next edition! Four more songs …
9. Grimes – Genesis
I cannot believe that Grimes produced this song (and album “Visions”) in Garageband over just 6 weeks. This song specifically is so beautiful. I saw a violin cover of it recently on YouTube and it was somehow even better. But, this song is one where I think the instrumental is the best part. Especially that opening, it’s so simple but so well executed. It also transitions well into the next song “Oblivion” (which is also fantastic), and is just a nice song all around. I own the vinyl record for this album and the quality of listening to that is just amplified.
10. Azealia Banks – 212 (feat. Lazy Jay)
This song. If you have not heard this song you are doing yourself a disservice. Now, I know that a lot of songs I recommend here are songs students here probably would not listen to, but this one falls right in line with some of the music you love so much. The house beat matched the lyrics creating the perfect vibe that just makes you want to keep listening. The chorus is so catchy and pretty unforgettable.
11. Kate Bush – This Woman’s Work
I am so thankful Kate Bush had her revival with “Running Up That Hill” a few years ago (and I would like to say that I listened to her before she went viral). But, “This Woman’s Work” is Kate’s best. It’s a beautiful song that evokes an emotional feeling every listen. The part where she sings “I should be crying, but I just can’t let it show / I should be hoping but I can’t stop thinking” is so powerful, and leads to Kate at her most authentic.
12. Björk – Hyperballad
This is one of the most dramatic songs ever made. Björk has this ability to build up tension throughout her songs to create such a satisfying end, and this song exemplifies it. It comes from “Post”, an album many consider her best. And this song is the stand out from it. This is so ahead of its time and feels fresh even though it was released almost 30 years ago. Björk masters the craft of fitting production perfectly with her vocals.
